The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), European Network of National Meteorological Services (EUMETNET), and Netatmo are excited to announce their collaboration within the ECMWF pilot project on IoT Observations for Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP). This innovative project, implemented by EUMETNET, aims to develop mechanisms for data access, data management, and their use in weather forecasting services.
Netatmo, a French company renowned for its smart home devices initially designed for individuals, will provide live a very high density of meteorological data from personal weather stations across 14 European countries for a period of six months. Users at National Meterological Services and ECMWF will test these data and establish their complementary role alongside the traditional high-quality, lower-density observations produced by National Meteorological Services.
This collaboration marks a significant step forward in leveraging IoT technology for weather prediction and is a good example of a public-private partnership. The project will address critical aspects such as data quality control and GDPR compliance, ensuring that the data collected is both reliable and secure.
About Netatmo
Founded in 2011, Netatmo designs and manufactures smart home devices, including personal weather stations, security cameras, and thermostats. Acquired by the Legrand Group in 2018, Netatmo continues to innovate in the field of home automation and energy efficiency, providing users dedicated APP to monitor and remote their residentials uses effectively, providing users with tools to monitor and manage their home environments effectively.
About ECMWF,
The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) is an independent intergovernmental organization supported by 35 states. ECMWF is both a research institute and a 24/7 operational service and is a world leader in numerical weather predictions providing high-quality data for weather forecasts and environmental monitoring to its members and the wider community. ECMWF is a multi-site organisation, with its headquarters in Reading, UK, a data centre in Bologna, Italy, and offices in Bonn, Germany.
About EUMETNET
EUMETNET is a collaborative network of 33 European National Meteorological Services, with the current status of a general partnership (société en nom collectif – SNC). EUMETNET fosters cooperation among its members and provides a framework for joint programmes in various fields of meteorology, including observing systems, data processing, and forecasting products.
